Nothing says South Texas like the iconic Texas indigo (Drymarchon melanurus erebennus). This five and a half foot male was photographed on the U.S. side of a section of the (now, infamous) “Border Wall” that was erected several years ago. It stands between Brownsville, Texas and its sister city, Matamoros, Mexico.
My name is Clint Guadiana. I work as the Curator of Reptiles & Amphibians at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas . . . about a mile and half from the US / Mexico border. This is really a land of herpetological diversity, with many species found nowhere else within the United States. Some of these are the enigmatic cat-eyed snake (Leptodeira septentrionalis) and the unique Mexican burrowing toad (Rhinophrynus dorsalis). For a multitude of reasons, they are truly living on the edge.
