While it may take a little more time to create a fuel break with a mulcher, it has a minimal impact on any intact groundcover that may be suppressed. There was actually wiregrass clinging to life beneath the gallberry overstory. On the opposite end of the spectrum, creating a line with a tractor/plow destroys existing groundcover.
